Intellection launches compact, rugged QEMSCAN® R-series for remote site mineral analysis
Intellection is taking sophisticated automated mineral analysis out into the field, with the launch of its new compact QEMSCAN® R-series.
Significantly broadening the QEMSCAN® technology’s market, the two models in the R-series have been designed for use on location for minerals, oil and gas exploration, and process improvement.
“Our customers are out there in the field, all over the world,” Intellection CEO Calvin Treacy said. “We are going to be there with them, giving them the information they need for on-the-spot decision making, that will have a direct bottom line benefit.”
The R-series has been designed to allow on-site technicians to carry out routine sample measurements and produce a set of standard reports.
Its advanced particle analysis characterizes rocks and ores, producing detailed quantitative mineralogical measurements. The automated system can operate unattended, non-stop for over 48 hours.
Potential locations for using the QEMSCAN® R-series include mining and oil and gas exploration camps, mine sites, quarries, and minerals and coal processing facilities.
Each unit comprizes the QEMSCAN® instrument and an operator workstation. The entire system folds and packs into a series of tough transportable road cases, ready for transportation.
“We’ve made it more rugged to suit field conditions, faster to install, simpler to use, and easier to service in the field,” Mr Treacy said.
“Its functionality is similar to that of the existing, larger QEMSCAN® E-series, but with a simpler user interface and reduced range of options to keep it cost-effective for site use.
“When more complex analysis is required, the QEMSCAN® R-series can do the scanning on location, and data can be sent back via built-in remote access functionality to a central laboratory equipped with an E-series system, with the full suite of analysis tools.”
The new systems will be officially launched at the PITTCON laboratory science conference and trade show in New Orleans, 2-7 March 2008, allowing 20,000 to 30,000 international attendees to see the prototype models.
Intellection expects to carry out the first R-series customer installations in the second half of 2008.
The system’s development was in part funded by a $5 million AusIndustry grant awarded to Intellection in November 2006 to develop portable technologies.
“The R-series is part of our ‘lab-in-a-box’ concept for a self-contained, deployable laboratory facility in a mobile unit,” Mr Treacy said. “We’ve had excellent customer feedback on this, and are continuing to develop new solutions to meet customer needs.
“Reliability is absolutely essential for this sort of system in remote locations. The R-series uses the same technology that has proven itself time and again to QEMSCAN® E-series users, with the highest quality instruments from leading international suppliers such as Carl Zeiss and Bruker.”
