QEMSCAN® is capable of identifying most ore- and rock-forming minerals in milliseconds, providing quantitative data, mineral maps and high resolution images
technology
The QEMSCAN® measurement instrument combines electron beam technology, high resolution backscatter and secondary electron imaging with state-of-the-art liquid nitrogen-free energy dispersive X-ray spectrometers (EDS) into a purpose built, fully integrated system.
QEMSCAN® originated with Australia’s Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO) in the late 1970s, with the invention of the QEM*SEM® technology — using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-rays to analyse and identify materials. Commercial development continued throughout the 1980s and 1990s, leading to the state-of-the-art QEMSCAN® technology. QEMSCAN® combines features found in other analytic instruments such as a SEM or electron probe micro analyser (EPMA), taking them to the next generation of analytic solution designed for unattended, high productivity analysis of minerals, rocks and materials.
The QEMSCAN® system is unique in its ability to handle a wide range of sample types, from thin sections of core samples to soil and sand, from manufactured products to dust. The iDiscover™ software not only controls the operation of the measurement instrument but is also available as a standalone software package for use by specialists to analyse the data generated by a QEMSCAN® instrument. This advanced analytic software suite provides information and tools designed for use by geologists, mineralogists, metallurgists, chemical engineers and others in applications ranging from exploration, though production to remedial and environmental monitoring
